We feel we should note that despite how kind the Indian Country article was towards some aspects of colonial oppression (likely in the name of minimizing negative response from colonists), no child, woman or any other gendered individual can say a marriage to a man who is her captor is consensual. Especially not a BIPOC person to a white man in a white military base in which they are kept hostage. The fact that John Rolfe viewed her as a financial asset that he then discarded through death in England further attests to that.

have been ignored
Sent to Henrico in 2021 through their “Contact” form, as a start. Praying for compassion and kindness 🙏🌈
“Kwe’! I hope y’all are well. My partner of 13 years and I just moved back to the area. We lost our home in covid in Jersey City in the first wave, and are staying with friends kind enough to give us a room, while we recover and get back to our wellness work empowering marginalized relations.
Since being here I’ve seen that y’all use Pocahontas’s image [along with our sacred corn and tobacco] for your gov seal. I would have contacted sooner, but the stress of having a racist mascot so prevalent around me again, combined with caring for a lot of relations, made this take longer than I’d like. Trash days are especially horrible, as having her image on rows of cans up and down the street is basically PTSD nightmare fuel [and I say that as an Mi’kmaq mixed person who grew up outside of Boston in the 80’s].
I are y’all planning to change this? Native American Heritage Month is coming up, and changing a seal depicting a kidnapped, raped, trafficked, and then murdered girl is a way you can honor that, along with the other actions Va is taking part in to minimize racism in it’s governmental structures.
